A program that aims to advance Tompkins County’s 75 percent waste diversion goal received a $15,000 state grant last week.

The project, “Save the Food: Cooking Up a Food Waste Prevention Campaign for Tompkins County,” seeks to develop an educational module for classroom presentations, tours, social-media campaign and a community screening and panel discussion of the video “Just Eat It.”

“Our goal is to reduce residential food waste before it is generated,” Tompkins Waste Reduction and Recycling Specialist Kat McCarthy said in a statement.

Teens to decorate library

Area teens are invited to paint a spring-themed design on the Tompkins County Library’s windows, a news release said.

Mural painting is scheduled 5 to 8 p.m. March 6 at Tompkins County Public Library, 101 E. Green St. The event will have free pizza, and the program is free and open to young adults 11 to 19 years old, a news release said.

Contact Young Adult Services Librarian Regina DeMauro at (607) 272-4557 extension 274 or rdemauro@tcpl.org for more information.

Seed starting workshop

A workshop on seed starting is scheduled 6 to 8 p.m. March 3 at Cornell Cooperative Extension, 615 Willow Ave.

The $5 to $10, sliding scale, workshop will show participants how they can start different types of vegetable seeds, construct a simple PVC light stand for growing seedlings under lights, and gain hands-on experience sowing different types of seeds.

Pre-registration is strongly recommended in case of class cancellation due to weather, a news release said. To register, call (607) 272-2292 or email cab69@cornell.edu.
